Our Story

Port City Signs & Graphics Inc. has a long history of quality and service. We are Wilmington’s oldest sign company, begun in 1948 by Robert Barefoot as Port City Signs, an artisan sign-painting operation. Barefoot later passed the reigns to his protégé Fred Maurer, who grew up in the sign-painting business and continued to develop the Port City Signs tradition of solid customer service. Maurer took advantage of emerging technologies of the day, purchasing one of the first vinyl letter cutters, which led to greater efficiency, affordability and volume.

A new chapter began in January 2008 with a transition of ownership to Sabrina and Michael Davis, relocation and an updated name. The storied company moved from its Castle Street location to a convenient Oleander Drive facility. The new name, Port City Signs & Graphics Inc., reflected the conversion to wide-format digital printing and expansion in product offerings. Sabrina has a background in broadcast and print journalism, corporate communication and graphic design. Michael is a fourth-generation Wilmington small business owner.
